Debating a Cake and Life's Other Important Aspects

Can we offer you a slice of cake? How about chocolate cake? No? Well then, how about something with vegetables or fruit, a little carrot or banana cake? Not your thing? Prefer some pie? Or how about a cheese platter? Well, we have some of that too.

Now your palate is wet, indeed, your mouth is foaming like a raging dog, and you must satisfy this craving. You have a fire in your belly that needs venting and a wild thirst in your mouth to satisfy. You yearn for that feeling of satisfaction after the desire is fulfilled.

This thought fires you up. The debate is on again! They don’t know what they are talking about. You have an idea. You know you can debate it. You know others will disagree with you, but that’s alright – you will still respect them, even though you disagree right back!! You will feel satisfied – it is out there, it is fulfilling, the hunger can be diminished (though never quite gone).

‘What on earth is this?’ you are probably saying by now? Quite simply, it is my welcome to you from ‘Current Debates and Discussions’, a forum at VoicesNet. Yes, believe it or not the preceding monologue was to introduce you to a forum that stands alone at VoicesNet, dedicated not specifically to poetry, but to – you guessed it – debating current issues of worldly interest (and divide)!

"What is such a forum doing at a poetry website?" you may then ask? The aim is offer a place for poets to voice their concerns about a diverse variety of issues and to provide some poetic inspiration!

Probably the best thing for poets is that debating enhances communication. Given that poetry is presented in verbal and written formats, communication is vital, therefore, all poets rely on communication skills.

The topics addressed at the forum are wide and diverse, and are driven by the interests and concerns of the members of VoicesNet. Presently, issues such as drug legalization, prejudice and equity, Mad Cow Disease, feminist issues, and the death penalty are being discussed. Other debates we have had in the past encompass concerns on globalization, education, health care, S.A.R.S., breast-feeding, male circumcision, child abuse, and war related issues.

We welcome your ideas and input into this friendly atmosphere of debate and mutual respect.

So with that, I offer you a piece of cake (or pie, or cheese), and invite you to ‘Current Debates and Discussions’. May that fire in your belly be sated and the thirst in your mouth, quenched.
