Hi Eddie and great to see you posting on this month's Challenge. Of course, we - that's you and I at least - lived in a much different environment than the youth of today enjoy! I too remember my first 'working days". My first pay packet was also handed over to my Mother, who told me, to keep it and use it to buy a pair of heavy work boots. WW II was in full swing and chances were I would be called up before too long, and I should make the best of my young days, whilst I could. Two weeks' pay was just sufficient to get the boots I needed, and they served me well. Heavy - 4lbs in weight as I recall. Later when I had joined the RN I made a weekly allotment to Mother who was to spend it on herself or as she chose. Did she do so? Not one penny! When I returned from active duty in the Far East, and was engaged to be married, she gave me a Post Office savings book, with every darned penny, there for my new life! No wonder tears well up in our eyes, when we recall those days. I'm sure that most everyone who was born back in the days when family and marriages were made to last, could come up with Memorable Moments such as yours. Perhaps we tend to be sentimental over such things, but personally, it was a lesson I learned from one I loved without any doubt at all. She could have used every penny of it, and I would have been just as proud of her and her love, as I was for what she did. Parents made many sacrifices for their children, and I for one, have no regrets! Both my parents remain ever present in my heart, as they did all those years ago. Thanks for posting and the memory which means so much to me. Fondest regards to May and of course, yourself. Hope your recovery is progressing as expected? PS: Fifth snowfall just cleared away! Bitterly cold yesterday - minus 20C - thankfully no wind, but much warmer today. No sign of thaw as yet!! Far too early, for this snow, but perhaps another sign of global warming? Ciao Rhymer.
