MY PET 'N' I

Author: Nkiru Banjoko

Poem:
MY PET 'N' I

  My furry little friend,
Is a delightful little fiend.
On my face he’ll press his nose,
And makes me feel so close.
Though no words are spoken,
Yet much affection is woven,
Between my furry little pet ‘n’ I.

He loves to poopoo on my chair,
And leaves with no cheer,
Making me grit my teeth in the pain,
I try to hold back in vain.
So many other things it does,
That makes me surely to know,
That the furry little pet I love,
Is a nasty little pest I hate.

On four wheels of rubber,
It makes my heart pound in wonder.
With no arms to hold me, I ponder
Why it is fast becoming a lover,
Glimmering and beckoning on me to spend on it,
All my hard earned money to the least,
This my four legged pet of pure metal,
I hope, someday will not be the pest to run me mental.

The beast I know for certain is,
The beast that drives me to tease,
Mammon and give him a kiss,
And in my life something definitely is amiss.

Though I love the company of my pets,
Whether the metallic or furry pet.
Though I would love to believe in my heart,
Of my life they are a part,
Yet I know I seek something deeper,
And yea, certainly something better,
I had hoped to find in my pets,
Only to discover in them the pests,
Buried deep as in felt.

MOUSE

Author: Sarah Hardy

Poem: MOUSE

Crunching by
Almost silently
Under the forest's sleeping trees
Leaves cascading from the sky
Red and brown
Picturesque
Almost like heaven is falling down

Tiny is the mouse
Lost among the sea of leaves
Small and forgotten
To almost all
Except the great predator
Always on the prowl

Mortal peril
To face day after day
The life of the mouse
Is no easy way
Like the life of the soldier
With the sun and the desert
And danger every which way

Hawks threatening in the sky
And not knowing what lurks
Behind the tree
One short pounce away
For some scary animal
Larger than he

Full of fear
But pressing on
Past the puddle
Rippling in time
To the rain's melodic drops
Of harmony

A soft tuft of grass
Replenishing,
A big burst of energy
For something so small
Like fuel to a sputtering engine

Almost there
Protection is within reach
A dark hole
Devoid of all light
Is it's home, hidden from sight
