CENTRAL PARK

Author: Maximilian Heusler

Poem:
CENTRAL PARK

An Early Spring Time Stroll Through Central Park

Black haze smoke poking out of poison lungs, running trails desecrated by jogging victims
blamed for poverty and disillusion, blood stained pavement littered with fear and malt liquor
praising street soldiers who fell rampantly before their time...........and the Good Humor trucks
well we can all see how the trucks play the middle ground, between prep school brat
and Chanel mommie nodded out on the side from one too many Ambien's
There are no animals left in the children's zoo, just statues and a statutory silence
MoMa concaving into the benches, I'm forced to think of her and him
they say he resembled a Kennedy, and she, well she was a little whore wasn't she?
having sex with him on a park bench like that......ya know the park sees all, and remembers all
whether I'm five or twenty five the park remembers me.... it remembers sandbox diatribes,
winter time sledding, climbing on the Alice and Wonderland monument, and even fights after school
I stare at the boathouse and wonder why they killed him, how could two people so young have wanted to "gut the fatty'"?
Was that the day our music died? Or slightly after?
The reservoir mocks me with it's stillness, it's contempt for me, and I wonder if it knows we no longer drink from it
The park seems a lot smaller to me, before it was like a forest in the middle of my own Utopia, it is now a constant reminder of what has left, or what never was in the first place
When my parents used to fight my father would take me to the park, to the carousel
I stand there now watching the ceramic and iron horses transport children to a magic land only open to the young and pure
Their smiles procured by some sort of illicit drug that even I've become too old to take,
too old and too stale, the horses keep rotating and the music keeps playing
and I focus in on one horse in particular that is all white with blue reigns,
it is the only horse without a child on top of it
something catches me about the horse and by the fifth turn I've realized what it is
The white horse is weeping............

MARDI GRAS

Author: Paul Fleischer

Poem: MARDI GRAS

:oh; young eyes of new orleans and far
halt your dreams and see them come so true
for your days of want are near to come
and shall go merry,happyandgay
the dormer blows no zephyr, but see of beautiful sight .

Mom sew no seam or milk a friesian in
but toss pan cakes with orange and brandy for we
rita rears no pain and shall be with stains
matthew prays no moon, but the scotching light

the times are not to be same again
The sun will shine with its rays so wide
Hear the streets cry for joy
the days for us to roam and toil
from hamlet to chimneys we go
and sing a song the pirates sung
today is mardi gras
we shall lay our bars
and eat pancake and brandy
and say what fortune we,ve made
