Two Poems from our Basketball Poetry Collection

BASKETBALL TRY OUTS

Author: Jackie Strother

Poem:
BASKETBALL TRY OUTS

  Try outs start today
I wonder how well I do
What if I don't do well
What if I screw up
Or even make myself look stupid

I can't help but to worry
I am really nervous too
I really love basketball
But what is a girl to do

I don't think I can take the pressure
I think I might give up
But if I do
I would become
Something I didn't wish to

So, should I give up
Or should I keep trying
Which should I choose
So hard to decide
And just not enough time
But I have to make a decision quick

I don't want to become a quitter
That is something I just will not do
So I guess I thought about it
I finally figured it out
I will keep trying
No matter what is to come about

So it is the last day of try outs
The coach calls my name
I stood there for a moment
I took in a deep breath
I then walk into her office

She asks me to sit down
I really didn't want to
But then she gave me this stare
So I sat down anyway
I was just sitting ther
Not saying a word
There was nothing but silence
Except for my leg shaking like a leaf

Then she breaks the silence
And starts to say
Well, I am sorry
Then before I would let her finish
I told her I already knew
I told her not to worry
That I would be ok

She says, what are you talking about
I was just going to say
That I was sorry for making you so nervous
So do not run away
So don't worry
You did make the team
We thought you would be great for the team

So I did make the team
There was nothing to worry about
I was shaking like a leaf for no reason
I did keep trying
No matter what
Even when it was easy
and when it was tough
But I still never gave up!

OUT OF LUCK

Author: Norina Geniston

Poem: OUT OF LUCK

Basketball’s the name of the game
Five and five we run out and play
Down and up the ball goes through
I shoot two for me and so do you

Shoot the ball in that white net
And in the hoop two hands met
A rebound, that’s what it’s bound to be
And eyes stare at the ball to see

Pass the ball to me, pass the ball to you
With two minutes left, I asked if it’s true
“The opponent’s leading by eleven points to be…”
He answered, “So do your best to catch up with those bumblebees!”

One minute left and it’s a tie
Forty, thirty, twenty-five
I shoot the ball and miss the shot
Well, too bad, I’m out of luck.
