Believe it or not, the earliest record of Fathers Day was found in the ruins of Babylon. A young boy carved a message to his father on a card made of clay nearly 4,000 years ago. He sent wishes of good fortune and a long life.
Fathers Day is now celebrated around the world on different days throughout the year. Fathers Day is celebrated in the United States on the 3rd Sunday in June.
The idea of Fathers Day in the USA came from Sonora Dodd, who adored her father, William, and held him in great esteem. He became the single parent of six children after his wife died during childbirth. Sonora was in her Spokane church in 1909 listening to a sermon on Mothers Day and thought that fathers should be recognized as well. She suggested to her church leaders that the honorary day should be June 5th, which was her Father’s birthday. The church leaders, though, chose the third Sunday in June and the first Fathers Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910.
The idea of celebrating Fatherhood didn’t gain a great deal of US national popularity outside of Sonora's church though until 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson sent a telegraph praising the Spokane community for their Fathers Day services.
In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson extended the popularity by declaring the third Sunday of June to be the official USA Fathers Day by signing a presidential proclamation. President Richard Nixon declared it to be a permanent national observance in 1972.
