VICTORY IN JESUS Royal Wedding: Read the Stirring Sermon by Most Rev. Michael Curry
You know; I can state as so many can today that; Over here in Great Britain, the season of spring has now certainly stepped in. For it is during such periods of such a season, spring into summer and summer throughout, relaxation unto my own mind is brought forth. So much of my practical activities throughout the depressing winter period, would now have seen to and so therefore, being time to relax either indoors or outdoors in the sun, alongside the sound of flowing waters. The sunlight bringing in with it; not a burning barbecue, but in my case so as to celebrate victory, a further burning Churchill Cigar.
My interest in such a subject as cigars had found its way in so soon, following the funeral of my father. I do so clearly recall that particular day of his death, all after receiving an update by phone during my period of helping other people in need during my working hours. Need I state that through over twenty years at the time of undergoing such a style of act, all had become expertise slavery experience, through either a person deteriorating, or otherwise showing signs of decline in health. Yet on one particular occasion I was more or less, brought to a sudden break-point and challenge by way of change to the wave length through now finding myself, on the run along a totally different route by taxi, and within such a short space of time.
It was once the taxi had touched the requested terminal, the main entrance of the hospital, I was so very soon finding myself racing through the hospital building so to then find myself together beside my mother, who within the ward sat beside my fathers bedside. What I was myself experiencing, and, I believe my mother was also by ways of contact placing her hand that had the rings upon her fingers, upon the hand of the one she had loved so very much. Both of us it so did appear were sensing the signs of the end. As for such a great use of precious jewellery unto various parts of the body having its use, and comments from the earlier period of living from relatives of such items not to put into use, I dread the day when such a person reaches the moment of moving on, and stepping into heaven.
My father in a variety of ways and including through aid of the skill of geographical and technical drawing for architectural design, had certainly played his part back during time of the second world war so as to, fight our way through the hidden path to victory, and also through a variety of ways along the front line; assist to keep the wounded whole. I have so many times and from so many occasions since, been receiving from a variety of people that statement of words; Keep burning!
Through the need of fuel so as to burn, my main method of travelling to work and home during the mid to late hours of the afternoon, would have been through the use yet again, of public transport. I was unable to understand the scenes of folk who it so appeared, enjoyed to put their foot down upon the accelerator so as to, naturally within a so little space of time, increase in ways of speed unto views of a dazzling illumination from the oncoming scene ahead. Maybe for, who knows but God, their reason or reasons of bringing forth such a shoot of fire before so many. Possibly being because of it being the period of a rush-hour, and therefore obtaining from somewhere the incorrect meaning of; God power so as to fight their way. Was the driver of the automobile blind? Were his eyes to open? I was myself meanwhile, so satisfied being so comfortably chauffeur driven by a top class suspension unto the correct terminal whatever the occasion, although the route most likely being to work and back again. Through the sound of the trumpet now coming on into use, our way of travelling first class, continued as all scenes would have illuminated so that all of us present, would have been honoured by the one method of a smooth sky-link touch down.
Rev 21: 15-21 The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls. The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia in length, and as wide and high as it is long. The angel measured the wall using human measurement, and it was 144 cubits thick. The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.
I do today meanwhile, so clearly recall so much of the very occasion of when my father departed both physically and mentally so to move on Spiritually. All was occurring on the very same day, and virtually time by the minute when the life of Princess Diana, Princess of Wales and mother of Prince William and Prince Harry, was brought to a sudden ending through, disaster following the power of a car crash in a Paris tunnel, on 31st August 1997. “Dr. King on this occasion of the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is correct: ‘We require the power of love, the redemptive power of love. And when we discover that, we will be able to make of this old world a new world. Love is the only way.’ ”
Unto myself, it had been through aid of modern technology that before an audience of millions, or perhaps billions from around the globe, when the Most Reverend Michael Bruce Curry, the presiding bishop of the American Episcopal Church, delivered a rousing sermon at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. (Episcopalianism is the American branch of the worldwide Anglican community; the Queen is the head of the Anglican church.)
His sermon, entitled “The Power of Love,” was a meditation on the transformative power of love, not only for individuals and families and but for the world. It had a strong theme of social justice, fitting for the wedding of a bride and groom who have placed service at the centre of their roles in the royal family. His transcript being:
“And now in the name of our loving liberating and life-giving god, father, son, and holy spirit, amen. From the song of Solomon in the bible, set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is as strong as death, passion, fears as there its flashes are flashes of fire, a raging flame. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods. Drown it out.
The late Dr. Martin Luther king once stated and I quote, ‘We must discover the power of love, the redemptive power of love, and when we do that, we will make of this old world a new world.’
Love is the only way. There is power in love. Don't underestimate it. Don't even over sentimentalize it. There's power, power in love. If you don't believe me, think about a time when you first fell in love. The whole world seemed to centre around you and your beloved. Well, there's power, power in love, not just in its romantic forms, but any form, any shape of love.
There's a certain sense in which when you are loved and you know it, when someone cares for you and you know it, when you love and you show it, it actually feels right. There's something right about it. And there's a reason for it. The reason has to do with the source. We were made by a power of love and our lives were meant and are meant to be lived in that love. That's why we are here. Ultimately the source of love is god himself. The source of all of our lives.
There's an old medieval poem that says, where true love is found, god himself is there. The new testament says it this way, beloved, let us love one another because love is of god and those who love are born of god and know god, those who do not love do not know god, why? For god is love. There's power in love. There's power in love to help and heal when nothing else can. There's power in love, to lift up and liberate when nothing else will. There's power in love to show us the way to live. Set me as a seal on your heart. A seal on your arm. For love, it is strong.
But love is not only about a young couple. Now the power of love is demonstrated by the fact that we're all here. Two young people fell in love and we all showed up. But it's not just for and about a young couple who we rejoice with. It's more than that. Jesus of Nazareth on one occasion was asked by a lawyer the sum of the essence of the teachings of Moses and he went back and reached back into the Hebrew scriptures and Jesus said, ‘you shall love the lord, your god, with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind and all your strength. This is the first and great commandment.’
And the second is like it. Love your neighbour as yourself. And then in Matthews' version, he added, he said on these two, love of god and love of neighbour, hang all the law, all the prophets, everything that Moses wrote, everything in the holy prophets, everything in the scriptures, everything that god has been trying to tell the world, love god. Love your neighbours. And while you're at it, love yourself.
Someone once said that Jesus began most revolutionary movement in all of human history, a movement grounded in the unconditional love of god for the world. And a movement mandating people to live that love. And in so doing, to change not only their lives but the very life of the world itself. I'm talking about some power, real power, power to change the world.
If you don't believe me, well, there were some old slaves in America's antebellum south who explained the dynamic power of love and why it has the power, they explained it this way, they sang a spiritual, even in the midst of their captivity, something that can make things right, to make the wounded whole.
This was as the newly-weds Harry and Meghan were dancing the night away at their wedding reception with their closest friends and family - and the bride wearing a ring which had belonged to Diana, Princess of Wales. Harry appears to have given his bride a poignant wedding day gift - an impressive, emerald cut aquamarine ring that was once owned by his late, beloved mother.
