IF I COULD

a poem by Gail P. Kay, Australia - poetry writer, author, poet

IF I COULD…

If I could write of love I would
Expound the beauty of your eyes
That drown me in their depths
And leave me gasping for more.
But I can’t.

If I could write of love I would
Wax lyrical about the way
You move in endless grace
That tears at my heart
And leaves me staggering in space.
But I can’t.

If I could write of love
I would tell the world
Of the way you hold my mind
And send it reeling, reaching,
Far beyond what I ever thought
It would or should.
If only I could.

If I could write of love
I would sing of the tenderness
I feel within your touch,
When you reach out
And protect me
as some trusting fragile child
who looks to you for every good.
If only I could.

If only I could say
you are beloved in every way.
That you are the wind that tickles my hair
that touches and taunts and laughs
as my chest gasps for air.
You are the earth that gives me life
that holds me to itself
until we become one.
But I can't.

To say I love you leaves me
stunned with its inanity.
Where are the words?
Where are those useless, lost,
apology for communion
on which I depend?
So in silence I
simply touch your cheek
as you sleep,
and weep.
