Taking Things for Granted

a poem by Kristine J. Trudeau, USA

It’s easy to take things for granted,
if this is all I’ve known,
if I’ve grown up without wanting
food, clothing, or a home.

It’s easy to take things for granted,
if I’ve never seen poverty,
if I’ve never suffered hunger,
and I’ve lived just for “me.”

It’s easy to take things for granted,
if wars, hunger and pain,
are pictures on my TV set,
and my life doesn’t change.

It’s easy to take things for granted,
when life is lived with ease,
and my heart has become hardened
to other people’s needs.

Lord, don’t let me take things for granted,
fan Your love into a flame,
give me a heart for those who hunger,
and those who are in pain.
