Life

a poem by Pushpalata Venugopalan, India

I resided in a shady tree,
I sought not the wide open skies,
Nor the expanses of the grey seas;
That promised growth and prosperity.

But to make way for others to fly,
Thrust I, myself, into the skies;
So dark and wild with a stormy tide,
That uncaring struck and struck at me!

Took took and gave nothing to me;
Bitterness I gained all the sweetness drained;
So haunting the home in a shady tree
Now just a shadowy dream!
