a poem by Pushpalata Venugopalan, India

When the body is alone,
for company only the soul,
memory pulls on heartstrings
and the departed come visiting!

Tears and smiles do alternate
when a dialogue is then created,
between the being and the departed
and feelings of utter loss pervade!

With joy and sorrow the brow cloud,
the present and past so curiously blend;
the present in threat of being drowned,
by the past in sorrow profound!

Until the present stakes its claim,
the memories and departed fade;
perhaps to appear another time,
when the body is alone,
for company only the soul!
