a poem by Pushpalata Venugopalan, India

When the body is alone,
For company only the soul,
Memory pulls on heartstrings
And the departed come visiting!

Tears and smiles do alternate
When a dialogue is then created,
Between the being and the departed
And feelings of utter loss pervade!

With joy and sorrow the brow cloud,
The present and past so curiously blend;
The present in threat of being drowned,
By the past in sorrow profound!

Until the present stakes its claim,
The memories and departed fade;
Perhaps to appear another time,
When the body is alone,
For company only the soul!
