The Moon

a poem by Pushpalata Venugopalan, India

Behold!
Radiantly illumined
the sunlit moon,
The beaming moon
on a sojourn alone.

Its solitary appeal
is only a feel;
It celebrates daily
the day-star dispatch;

And reigns supreme
in the nocturnal sky,
while court of clouds knightly
attend its moony glide!

The liberal stars shimmering
lighten the dismal sky;
as the moon summons sedately
the sleepy interlude.

Adapting habit
a flitting routine,
waxes, wanes and hiding
creates its jubilant strain!

A fading self,
at dawn, reflects-
abandons the show
for the brighter star;

Embraces lightly
the transient death
conscious of a repeat
recreation of life!
