CHRISTMAS CHESS

a poem by Jacinta Ramayah, Malaysia - poetry writer, author, poet

It’s the season of Christmas
the clan has gathered round,
Mum, the Queen of the board,
keeps family ties bound.

Elder brother and sister are
the bishops in the family,
They advise and quiz us
and lay down the decree.

Here, brother Knight extols
the beauty of Irish Christmas
At dinner there, his wife says,
he can't stop talking about us.

As the Castle, I see to dinner
and that tempers don’t flare,
Placate ruffled feelings
with a joke or two to spare.

My three younger brothers,
Pawns in this annual game,
Pleasant to all at Christmas
hope they remain the same.

But why do we gather every year
as chess mates, you think?
It’s the time we reminisce about
dad, the chessboard’s King.
