PREPARING FOR SPORTS DAY

a poem by Jacinta Ramayah, Malaysia - poetry writer, author, poet

It is a catastrophe out there,
sports day is in a week,
Medals need to be bought,
tents are running a leak.

How do you level a field
that refuses to be flattened?
How do you restrain kids
who refuse to be disciplined?

The teachers are impatient
for forms and equipment,
Principal is determined about
scores and achievement.

How much can you do with
only 24 hours a day?
How much can you complete
with 101 things to slay?

Money disappears like magic
to make gadgets appear,
Co-operation is needed to
carry heavy sports gear.

So what do you do before the
strain gets you down?
Will some rhyming help
to smooth away a frown?
