LABOUR DAY

a poem by Jacinta Ramayah, Malaysia - poetry writer, author, poet

Hooray! It’s Labour Day
on the first of May,
going to recline
with nothing on my mind,
Work to be put aside,
a cool drink by my side
cucumber for my eyes
a fan to swat flies,
Relaxing in the shade
a damp towel on my head,
if rhymes come by
I’ll gladly comply.

Son thinks it’d be greater
if I could labour
and give him a brother
he could command and order,
Daughters think that later
they may call friends over,
have a meal in the parlour
or go out for dinner,
But mum thinks it’d be better
that we go visit her,
for she needs some chatter
and company for good cheer.
