a poem by Lee Emmett, Australia - poetry writer, author, poet

he shows her a secret sign
squeezes: one, two, three
can be used at any time
especially if they’re angry

simple pressure of fingers
either on hand or arm
meaning ‘I love you’
will overcome all harm

later on they share with us
and it becomes family code
father’s gift to daughter
prevents anger overload

sometimes so irate, can’t
even speak, that’s when sign
comes into its own, with power
of communication divine
