GRIEF CATCHES UNAWARES

a poem by Lee Emmett, Australia - poetry writer, author, poet

grief catches unawares
choking, dining alone
memories of another time
in northern France

three years ago with
husband, looking out
for grandfather's name
on honour board at
Villers-Bretonneux

too much emotion to
swallow, sorrow takes
breath away, run to
bathroom, crying, put
on brave face, pay for
meal and walk away
