HONKING HORNS

a poem by Lee Emmett, Australia - poetry writer, author, poet

honking horns of heavy haulage
stinking swirls of steam and soot
humming harmony hushes heartbeat
maestro mimes melodies mute

whooshing wind whirring windmills
picknickers peck pretzels and popcorn
gaggle of girls giggle in glee
bragging boys boast bulky brawn

faltering feet faking foxtrot
whirling women waltz and wheeze
nervous nannies nudge neighbours
tsk! and tut! as tomboys tease

prim princess posing patiently
finicky photographer flicks fan near face
brass band's blaring bugle blows
bagpipes bellow over boom of bass
