BUENAVISTA, " THE LAND OF GOOD SIGHT"

a poem by Elizabeth Padillo Olesen, Denmark

What is on this land of "good sight"
when I see people
on their tattered rugs
and their shaky nipa huts
with children,dirty-faced
on the dusty road
who up in the mountains
run and hide in cold?

What is on this land of "good sight"
when I see the few landlords
with their mansion-like homes
and abundant food for their consumption
brought by the stooping tenants
with their aching backs
under the heat of the sun
and the smell of mud?

What is on this land of "good sight"
when I see the vast lands
of green and brown grass
idly waiting to be touched
to bear fruit for everyone
but untilled
as if hoarded by generations
because of the legal title
on paper kept by few men?

What is on this land of "good sight"
when the green earth
cannot yield food
for the common man and woman
who by dispossession and the rooted teaching of the generations
allow their sons and daughters to leave
and curse to land
to take pride
in working with light hands?

What is good
on this land of "good sight"
when at the known deposits of its gold
people rejoice and creep like ants
to search the rivers and the mud
but only to be told
that the area is concessioned
by a Mining Corporation
and that not anybody
should trespass?

They call it Buenavista,
the land of good sight,
of grandeur and beauty to the human eye
But is this God`s promised land?
Is Buenavista
the Lord`s promised land?
