INDIA AT 62 -INDEPENDENCE DAY!

a poem by Drsudarsan Damodar Prasad, India

****************************************
IT IS THE DAWN OF A SPECIAL DAY FOR ALL INDIANS WHO LOVE THEIR MOTHER LAND: HER SIXTY SECOND INDEPENDENCE DAY . I LOVE HER WITH ALL HER BLEMISHES , SHORT COMINGS , FAILINGS AND HER SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGICAL FIELD ! FOR ME, SHE IS ETERNAL, AND A BEAUTIFUL GODDESS WITH UNQUENCHABLE THIRST FOR KNOWLEDGE AND ART ; DISTINCTLY ORIGINAL IN HER WAYS AND ALSO THE CRADLE OF FINER VALUES OF LIFE AND THOUGHT WHICH MAKE FOR PURPOSEFUL LIVING AMIDST THE RUINS OF MODERN LIFE ,ITS PERILS AND UGLY FACES ! LOVE YOU MY BEAUTIFUL MOTHER , MAY YOUR AGE-LESS BEAUTY AND VALUES APPEAL AND CAST THEIR CHARM AND SPELL ON ALL NATIONS –MIGHTY AND WEAK ,RICH AND POOR ALL ALIKE ! GOD BLESS ALL THE HUMANS WHO ARE MY BLOOD BROTHERS AND SOUL SISTERS IRRESPECTIVE OF THEIR RACES AND COLORS , THEIR THOUGHTS AND ITS FLAVORS!

Hail Oh Divine Mother!
Hail Oh Mother- India!

It is a special dawn-
Of the day - so golden!
One of the most beautiful,
Of the Country ‘s day- so special ,
Nature most bountiful,
People so thoughtful,
Common-folk so soulful,
Mirth full,
With very few possessions,
And yet always so cheerful!

Let the day be marked,
By honoring the countless souls,
Who hurled themselves,
In to fires-
Of self sacrifice,
So that the infants-
Will breath the pure-
Air of freedom.

India will arise –
Not to lead conquering armies,
To neighboring countries,
But holding aloft her-
Eternal values-
And the lamp of wisdom,
Proudly and solemnly!

Arise and awake!
There is so much to do,
Before we can hope to rest.
The mountain and the summit,
Are yet too far away,
And the mountain roads-
So slippery and dangerous,
And moth-eaten traditions ,
Are waiting along –
With cold –death,
In deep pits,
And fearsome gorges-
On all our sides!
