Deepavali,The Festival of Lights

a poem by Sheela Chalapathi ramananda, India

A day after the festival of lights
I saw an amusing sight!

A little boy was looking for unburnt crackers,
In the rubbish piled up in the gutters.

I saw another little boy watching
Out of the window of a big building,

Dragging his wounded leg with difficulty
He climbed down the stairs with dextirity,

Holding crackers in his outstretched palm
He called out to the other boy to come.

The joy of giving and receiving the little gift
Had lit their innocent faces with an ethereal light!
