LIFE CYCLE OF A GIRL

a poem by Kanika Goel, India

A contortion in the kindred’s smile
A baleful look, all exultation ebbed away
She’s not an anathema, she’s a gift fragile
Beseeched her matriarch with an elated smile.

She is pampered with florid tenderness
Swathed in her mother’s arms, she blossoms like a corsage
Her caprice unrestrained with filial caress
Her brother’s indemnity like an unblemished buttress.

With aplomb her father chooses an elite consort
In aphasia though, she consents to give her all
She embraces her kinfolk, pledges never to retort
The coddled damsel is to a new condominium brought.

She shuns indolence and faces the chagrin with candor
The callow bride humbly atones for her juvenile faults
She’s castigated but meekness is her greatest armor
Finally her assiduousness wins approbation, in laws become adulators.

Years pass, she mellows as life passes through thick n thin
Her consanguinity remain special but her mate is more than kith n kin
Then she’s blessed with an angel,
Her soul her reflection and her beloved’s brew
The epoch doesn’t end and the course continues…
She a mother and her daughter the new ingenue….
