PROSAIC ERA (MONEY)

a poem by Oredola Olamilekan Ibrahim, Nigeria

PROSAIC ERA (MONEY)

My eyes can see far more clearly
Than a cat’s can see in the very mid of Night
Big tubers of yam growing on the trees
And the palm fruits from beneath the earth.

I can feel a blazing conflagration from the well 5
And the hen rending down the hawk
Birds going to nest on the deep-sea bed
And the Fishes swam to land to stroll and dance.

When Kings forsake their provenance
Oduduwa standing on the caliphate! 10
The Arewa, wrapper claded, Igwe!
Ndigbo crowned in Oyo Empire!

When a Pathfinder turns a Protégé
And all rulers relinquish their throne
Prosaic happenings here and there 15
Proscribing cripples stand and dance

When you see the pulp ruling the world
And glittering money saves and kills
Then slightly hides and watch the scenes
Lest you be carried away with the whirling winds. 20
