WHAT DO THESE HUMANS THINK?

a poem by Sheela Chalapathi ramananda, India

“They are killing us to build a Memorial
Oh! My friend!” quipped the tree to the squirrel.
The squirrel was busy filling its granary with
nuts and fruits and whatever food was available,
for the rainy season was very much round the corner.
The crow which was perched on a branch cawed angrily,
‘Uh! kill trees and along with them kill thousands of
birds,butterflies, squirrels, bees, snakes, monkeys
and an umpteen number of creatures which have their
homes in these trees, then build a Memorial for humans!
WHAT DO THESE HUMANS THINK?
ARE THEY THE OWNERS OF THE EARTH?
Touting 'Progression' they have sent the dainty sparrows
And colorful parrots scuttling away to the distant country.
The snakes don’t have any shady places to cool off
the summer heat. And so slither into their potties
to scare the life out of these selfish, greedy humans.
The garden lizards no longer have food to eat
in the concrete jungle and have entered the houses
of these foolish humans to compete with the house lizards!
The cool trees on either side of the highways and
in the few lung spaces of the city give comfort
and the much wanted rest and cool breeze to the tired drivers and daily wage earners.
But now where will they take their afternoon naps
and stretch and relax their tired bodies and minds?
for these trees are the poor man’s air conditioners.
These selfish humans do not realize that we are also
God’s children and that if we are destroyed, their
children will have no one to give them food and
water and company and all the good things in life!”
