BETWEEN DENMARK AND JAPAN IN WORLD CUP 2010

a poem by Elizabeth Padillo Olesen, Denmark

Between Denmark and Japan
in World Cup 2010

3 to 1 in earned goals
at football’s World Cup!
Hurrah to the Japanese!
Smaller in built than the Danes,
they in blue attire could manage
to make their stable shots.

The Danes have shown
their expertise and their best
But they could not compete
with the Japanese.
They, too, had to vow to
their own defeat.

The winner can scream with pride
The loser can stand in shock
still managing to shake a hand
with those who win
accepting that there are
those who are much better
than them this time.

And the World Cup
still remains the arena
for friendship, courage,
acceptance, tolerance
and great sportsmanship.
