a poem by Olomolehin John, Nigeria

My mind is covered with
a thick veil of sadness
like blind drawn across a window
The pool of joblessness within me
opts for an unwanted stay
and breeds countless larvae of lack

The muscles of my drive are infected
after several stings
from unfriendly flies of intimidation
and hard lines of vital needs
are etched on my face
like bold tribal marks

I raise the seedlings of my dreams
under many harsh seasons
yet in a land i grew to love
I nurse both hope and pain
and dare not give up
'cause this route leads to my destiny
