Highway

a poem by Olomolehin John, Nigeria

These roads are the pathways
to our dream places and destinations
they are sickly lengthened
to the nooks and crannies of the nation

The choiceless yoke on them
from heavy flow of vehicles
exposes their deficiencies
and the roads painfully express their illness
in sores of numerous potholes and unintended deathtraps

Habitual delegations of the repairs to road surgeons
are always a part of plot
to greedily enrich certain individuals
told to mask in contractors' costumes
while Works'ministries and Maintenance agencies
turned experts in negligence and sub-standard patchings

Though we are rich in ingredients of repair
vital stages of operations are deliberately ignored
and deceiving appearances are flaunted
as part of promises kept

Countrymen, let's ply on with ease
and cease not to expose our leaders' incompetence
