a poem by Elizabeth Padillo Olesen, Denmark

Jesus Entering into our Basement

We have all the best to offer
from our kitchen to the living room
from our bedrooms to our wardrobes
from the terrace to the hallway
we show the best that meets the eye
to all our guests that drop by.

But down deep in the basement-
in the basement of our house-
the hidden basement of our life,
we clutter the room with our past,
memoirs of shame and guilt,
of sorrows, hatred and mistrust.

Down deep in the basement of our life,
we find the cluttered garbage we’ve got
heaped up for years, plastered with dusts
And here Jesus visits our basement
to help us sweep the mounting garbage
as he comes to dwell as Lord of Life.
