CANTECE DE ADIO

a poem by Oredola Olamilekan Ibrahim, Nigeria

Zaijian, antio, abschied, la revedere;
In any language, still hard to say,
‘Goodbye’, a word said with tears in eye
And Lump in throat, throaty sigh.
With memories flashing in a spate
Unknown when to meet again in a date.
Dragging feet, heavy hearts and waving hands
Are all undoubting, the farewell’s bands?
Goodbye, au revoir, antio, adio, gaobie,
That’s all but we will have indeed to say.

And here the terminus, we’ll have to part
And go different, our life in whole to start
For we part to meet and meet but to part
We have no choice, bar in all to depart.
There were times we gambol in the meadow
Till the sun deface and brings our shadow
Times we sit in class, times under the sun
We’ve made to see that learning is fun
Good bye, au revoir, antio, adio, gaobie
That’s all but we will have indeed to say.

Times we’ll want to go indeed haywire
The teachers you see, won’t give us our head
They smack our booty with the ‘red’ wire
And have our head screw on the right way tread.
They never make obfuscate the learning words,
Kudos to you for all those watching words-
Our alma mater, our ivory tower,
Thanks for the learning, skills on us shower.
Good bye, au revoir, antio, adio, gaobie
That’s all but we will have indeed to say.

Times when we won most the races
And guffaw about in many places
Times, when in competition we took the prize
In most contests, we have the largest size
Times when we stood and cut in sun
It’s just to build us, indeed it is fun.
Times when we make foes and friends
We’ve known, to be friendly is the living trends’
Good bye, au revoir, antio, adio, gaobie
That’s all but we will have indeed to say.

Now, on our shoulder, the haversack
We’ve set to go, to seek our track.
Hundred students can’t play for same all years
Though interesting, all bit of our staying years
For every karibu is a must an au revoir
For we part to meet and meet but to clear
Oh! Our hearts are heavy, the feet and hands
With these, we play the farewell’s bands
Good bye, au revoir, antio, adio, gaobie
That’s all but we will have indeed to say…
