It's a Game!

a poem by Sheela Chalapathi ramananda, India

Watching a game of volleyball
I was wondering what went wrong after all.
Throwing a volley of abuses at each other,
The supporters of the teams indulged in a verbal brawl.
A victim of the anger and frustration of each player,
Kicked and buffeted was the innocent and helpless ball.
At times going up with fury and flying like a missile
And sometimes sailing smoothly like a quail.
Shedding tears at the disappointment of losing
And jumping up with the joy of winning;
More concerned about winning the game
The players did not play for the love of the game.
And at the end of it all, was the 'medal ceremony'
Drawing curtains on this game of joy and agony.
