Beyond A Glance

a poem by John Starks, USA

I went beyond a glance and chose to stare
At what a man would notice if he would
But move beyond his notion to compare
What some assume that he, inspecting, should.
I went a step beyond our fixed routine,
And saw transitions, linking state to state,
Or what a man is predisposed to glean
Should circumstances seal the course of fate.
But I did know that she and I were one,
And that she hid what moved along to woe
Within the scope of some scarce-noticed pun
Whose implications courted 'yes' and 'no'.
I went beyond an educated guess,
And, after thought, did give her love's caress.
