Despedida Party Tonight

a poem by Elizabeth Padillo Olesen, Denmark

And she asked me never to go out after seven.
And I asked why.
She said,"I've arranged a despedida party
for you tonight."
And I exclaimed, "Oh,uha... So who are the people you have invited?" I said so much surprised.
She said, "They are our friends in church, your relatives in town and your former students in life."
"Why do you do it?" I asked.
She said, "We have to celebrate your visit
We will not cry when you say goodbye but we
should together enjoy life".
I simply smiled.
And one by one they came to this auditorium
Music is played and the tables are set
Food of different colours are slowly brought in
And I wonder how long
this evening will last.
Bless be this circle of friendship and love!
Pedrita Malalay, my adapted sister into the family, arranged this despedida party, the eve before my trip back to Denmark, after a three-week holiday in the Philippines.
