a poem by Edwin Keith Jepson, UK - poetry writer, author, poet

Strong as an oak
That I was
Tall and muscular
Not an ounce of fat
But now the years
Have slowed me down
And my hair is replaced
By a well worn hat
Old age has some advantages
Like a free bus ride
And a walking stick
Theres meals on wheels
And a pension book
And a nosey neighbour
Who gets on your wick
There are friendly people
Who make you laugh
Close relatives
And nursing staff
But in your mind
Memories of old
You wish them back
Theres so much to be told
But the years clock on
And generations pass
And we are swept away
Like broken glass
