And Now Our Tomorrow Weeps

a poem by Joseph Chukwudiegwu Osita, Nigeria

Yesterday, we had set off this journey
Amid courage, hope and flaming enthusiasm
Treading in unity, the path of stress and honey
Shading glimmers of hatred and arrows of tribalism
And great future flamed with desires in our hearts

Amidst sea storms we had stood strong
Bind by the glory of our coat of arm
The song of the fluttering flag we had sung
In harmony and joy of its powerful charm
And unity erected a monument of peace in our hearts

But today, we are spelled by elixir of corruption
And the tops lead to glorify personal gains
Plucking our national treasures from portion to portion
Leaving no symptom of regain
And now our tomorrow weeps

On the current insurgency and many other woes disarming the unity of our beloved ethnically diverse nation-Nigeria
