I Looked Into Forever

a poem by Christine Anne Shaw, UK

I looked into forever
yet couldn't find my way.
I teetered on the brink of it
with feelings of dismay.

Forever is eternity
and off the scale to me.
I've tried but I can't contemplate
that's where I want to be.

He told me once that he would stay
forever by my side.
Be buried in the same dark grave
but how he crassly lied.

Eternity was somewhat short,
ten years was all it took
before another came along
and fished him off a hook.

I live each day and live it well,
no thoughts of time ahead.
Our days on earth are far too few
to think of when we're dead.
