Per Ardua Ad Astra (From Adversity To The Stars)

a poem by William Willis, Scotland

NOTE- From (1941-1953) 12,000 babies were born worldwide with a condition known as Retinopathy Of Prematurity.This condition was caused by high levels of oxygen given to these premature babies shortly after birth.This procedure led to problems with sight and in most cases blindness.

Per Ardua Ad Astra (From Adversity To The Stars)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Through the looking glass of safety,incubation safe and sound.
Premature but molly-coddled, house of glass being all around.
This baby's eyes were poisoned with these oxygen levels high.
They will never see a rainbow or a golden field of rye.
Through the looking glass of blindness, all his senses they did stir.
Of sharpened mind and matter, black and white they call him sir.
When a man who cannot see, paints a picture in his song.
Shines the light of creativity for us all to sing along.
Through the looking glass of blindness,forging many partnerships.
A Duke with musicality always at his fingertips
When a man who cannot see, saw a vision that would bring.
A day for all America to toast Martin Luther King.
Through the looking glass of blindness, trying to heal our worldly scars.
A blind man with a vision, from adversity to the stars.
Note - This musician overcame Retinopathy Of Prematurity and went on to become one of the best loved musicians the world has ever seen.
