This Graveyard in the Growing City

a poem by Elizabeth Padillo Olesen, Denmark

This graveyard,
this garden of flowers
on top of buried bones,
stands serene in the midst
of dazzling lights
and traffic jam.

This graveyard,
a monument of the past
of lives of men and women
before us, comes glowing
with the touch of love
through lighted candles
and burning incense.

Let us visit this graveyard
at the heart of this growing city,
a signpost of our destiny,
a great manifesto of
our fragility and mortality.
