'HOW CAN A BIRD THAT'S BEEN BORN FOR JOY SIT IN A CAGE AND SING'

a poem by Leif Phillips, Australia - poetry writer, author, poet

How can a bird sing
emptied of light
its cage the darkness
we have traded for sight
perched irrevocably
on the precipice of dream
a nightmare of wire
a song into scream
how can a bird sing
confined to contaminated feed
its captors fingerprints
denying its need
skies bare memory
true nest now gone
a love in contest
with a strangers morn
sounds break the silence
a wistful freedom calls
hello chasing sweet goodbye
love clinging to its walls
a sky no longer known
on its talon sits a ring
how can anything born of joy
sit in a cage and sing.
