POET'S PLEA

a poem by Joana paula Velasco Bulatao, Philippines

Don’t mistake my silence for apathy
But an act of meditative empathy
Don’t mistake my silence for weakness
But one of my peaceful strengths
Don’t mistake my silence for retreat
But as a thinker's greatest feat
Don’t mistake my silence as showing dislike
But a protection as feelings take a hike
Don’t mistake my silence for anything
In silence, you don’t know what I am thinking

Don’t mistake my youth for ignorance
But your opportunity to give some guidance
Don’t mistake my youth for childishness
But for sweet childlike freshness
Don’t mistake my youth for dependency
But for submitting under democracy
Don’t mistake my youth for lacking of wisdom
But by that merit think that mine is the Kingdom
Don’t mistake my youth for weakness
But oh I can rise in awesome greatness
Don’t mistake my youth for anything
My youth is willing to offer you everything

Don’t mistake my smiles for happiness
But behind all that can be sadness
Don’t mistake my smiles for being gay
But my strength I can still give even when I am not okay
Don’t mistake my smiles for a compliment
But I think your hurtful words need discernment
Don’t mistake my smiles for acceptance
But my way of forbearance
Don’t mistake my smiles for anything
As one can freely give it to any living thing

Don’t mistake my actions into something out of uncertainty
But by inquiry and going to me, will give you clarity
