a poem by Leif Phillips, Australia - poetry writer, author, poet

‘It was the most savage graffiti’
the television announcer said
the news guy as well called him
we were expecting
that they had beaten a guard senseless
with their evil cans
and then painted his prostate body
with dubious telegrams
from a Queen on a stamp they saw
but apparently not
there was just a lot of graffiti
so it was called savage
we wondered what else
we could call savage
a savage round of applause
a savage picnic
with a savage amount of sandwiches
and savage to drink
made savage trips to the toilet
savaged copiously
mostly though
we hillbilly’s thought
it was just ordinary sensational journalism.
