A name...more than letters

a poem by Elizabeth Grace Shearer, UK - poetry writer, author, poet

A name is seen throughout history
used by Queens, Kings even you and me
A mixture of people, different from each other
but sharing one name unites us stronger than lovers

Its meaning is different with each language around
Some may mean beauty others fresh from the ground
but whatever its meaning one thing is true
It what we are known by and respond to

At the birth of a child its not surnames we look for
That's already chosen, decided long before
but its that vital first name that causes so much stress
A girl or a boy? what will fit best?

So regardless of history or what others think
A name is precious, a way for ancestors to link
Not just a muddle of letters together
but an identity chose to be remembered forever

A world where...
