a poem by Olomolehin John, Nigeria

Your smile suddenly dimmed
and stares of sadness dominated your face
when i laid at your feet
my seeds for the sowing season

You felt, on your palm, their outer carp
And counted, on your fingers, the decades
to go before they would mature
and i became sad

'Cause you did not see
the pride in planting these seeds
to give shed for the coming ones
Perhaps it is 'cause we grew up
without shed to shield our skin
which is now scorched
