Friday night

a poem by Olomolehin John, Nigeria

So lonely tonight
than all other nights
when i had been rescued
by many outings and tight schedules

I feel like an old route
plied by uncountable feet
who have now settled
for smoother and better alternatives

Lovers spread around in pairs;
inside cars, hand-in-hand,
romance-sizzling strolls
and in dark corners
savouring every moment

Pictures of my good times in love
flooded my thought
and memories of those gone seasons
when i found and cultivated the seeds
stir my longings for another
to speedily come

But my heart holds on to a heart
my endurance is weather-beaten
the firmness loses strength by day
amidst many tempting options
and i tread on in a state
of fragile hope all day long.
