"IGBA MKPE"

a poem by daniel chidie, Nigeria - poetry writer, author, poet

Seen most amongst my tribe
a folly upon the woman
"ORIAKU or ODOZIAKU"
as most get the impressive address
IGBA MKPE ! A society practice
which deems the she on compel
to forfeit n'show grief
thus to the husband's demise
stripping of her physical values

the tribes practice
within all nook's of my land
a sure marking proceed
prone to respect in death
a'times of deep love in loss
first the hair with bizarre scrape
a sure note for a journeyed admirer
whom viz has trailed the route far beyond
assuming the pain of a deserted heart
second ' the colour flare
the bright sting to wisher's eyes
intended to portray a tearful fact
thus! ORIAKU now NWANYI ISI MKPE"
as so said in mother tongue

now the grief n' attitude
a rule mostly set by relating men and women
for the time annual
when all bricks of life are smeared with her tears
