My Father's Name.(I celebrate you dad)

a poem by peninnah ng'ang'a, Kenya

Some say i am a beautiful girl that got lucky while still young
others says am a beautiful girl with beautiful brains hence lucky
What they don't know is that luck has nothing to do with it.

Before i could even spell my name,my father would make me read newspaper word by word out loud
He would take me on his bike from town to town hunting for customers
and i was never exempted from the role of herding his livestock
Oh!And i had my sheep and piece of land that i was supposed to tak care of.

My father was many things but lazy and soft was never part of it.

Though i was lucky enough to spend 8 great years with him
his teachings and lessons and drive still light up my path.

Seventeen years without you dad and i did not make it this far by luck
Its all in your name
Its all in what your name stood for.
It is in what your name stands for;
Hardwork,honesty,faith,persistent,character,authourity and power.

You are my father,my hero,my guide and my role model.

Its not about luck
Its about the name,my surname,my father's name.

I celebrate you dad.
I hope i make you proud
I hope i live up to "kahee gakwa"(my son) as you would proudly call me.
May you rest in eternal peace.

Yours with pride
