The Exchange!

a poem by John Starks, USA

I saw in him (though we did differ, so,
(E'en what I had (perhaps in less degree)
And that he, well examining, could see
The method by the which I came to know.
Each, wed to what he loved, ne'er letting go,
Believed his facts were backed by history,
And that he ne'er was duped by heresy,
Nor labeled by his peers as odd or slow.
Ah, each would serve the other as a host,
As each felt closer to some 'virgin truth':
E'en that (were drinking sacred) he would toast.
Each dared exemplify unflagging couth,
And made of opportunity the most,
By seeming (both in depth and scope) a sleuth!
