Christmas @ 2017

a poem by Anjani George, India

One more year and Christmas is in the air
Star studded the sky; lo the season of joy is here
Balls and bells, candy sticks and carols
Raisins soaked in rum, as rich plum cakes wait to be baked
Many years back, in a far away land as a little kid
I would wait for the season with bated breath
A faint recollection of a beautiful real Christmas tree
Sparkling champagne and roasted turkey
Christmas gifts being unwrapped excitedly
Christmas carols and the nativity tableau of course
The joy of the season would never end
Year after year Christmas kept coming
With never a year of dampened spirit
While I grew from kid to a girl
We were back home, the fervor was anew
Early morning mass and the feast after lent
The myth of Christmas father was unlocked
Donning Christmas caps and santa masks
We sang carols with all our might
To spread the tidings of hope
With happiness we beamed, hearts and minds
Overfull with the joy of Christmas
No longer a kid, no longer a girl
Yet Christmas is here as with every year
The platter is turned and times have changed
Now the feel of Christmas, it’s my turn to recreate
The joy, the spirit, the happiness of this lovely season
I have today within my reach and a lovely family to share
With folded hands I am thankful for this privilege
So merry Christmas and let the celebrations begin!
