Stopping by Big Joe’s on a Chemistry Tuition evening

a poem by Anjani George, India

Whose shop this is I think I know
His house no clue but name is Big Joe
He may not see me stopping here
To take a look at the pretty paintings in his store

Those watching me may think it queer
As I stare through the glass at the frames
Of Red Indians, Bulls, Pretty women and Chickens
On this dark mosquito ridden evening

Big Joe is back, munching on a bag of chips
Peers at me to ask if there’s something I want
The other sounds are of engines and loud horns
And of noisy kids mugging their lessons

Big Joe’s has Ranch pork, Lamb, Saussies and Kebabs
But I still have lots more time at hand to just stare
And hours of wait before she is here
And hours of wait before she is here
