Scars of Life

a poem by Anjani George, India

Shriveled hands, throbbing veins
Palmar creases on the rise
Peeling skin around the nails
Oh what a sorry state of affairs
Acne ridden and prominent rashes
Wrinkled brow and puffed up eyes
Deep throated and pot bellied
There are scars almost every where
Scars from birth, scars of falls and cuts
Scars of sores healed and unhealed
Scars from the cooking pot, from harsher times
Scars with secrets, scars that tell tales
Yet reminiscent of by gone days
Each one precious in its own might
Enough to put back a smile on my lips
And make me beautiful all over once more
