The Elephant in the Room

a poem by Lady Shaula Salathe, Australia

A cup of tea at 5 past 3,
just like we'd always known
And as we sat and had our chat
Put on our little show

And every word seemed evidence to me
That what was silent was plain enough to see
And tea was over way too soon to mention
The Elephant in the Room

They told me that
Don't speak or chat about
things with trunks or tusks that you can see
And I was good
Spoke like I should
and blushed when they mentioned tusks on TV

And every word seemed evidence to me
That what was silent was plain enough to see
And tea was over way too soon to mention
The Elephant in the Room

I thought everyone had an elephant
I’m not the only one
Walking round the world with an elephant
Isn’t that much fun

I thought everyone had an elephant
Turned out I was wrong
You know what I'm talking about
If you understand this song

So don’t ask me to tea
Cos it won’t be just me
I’ll meet you at High Noon
There’s an Elephant in the Room
